Driving from MIA to Key West on US-1
Planning the trip from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Key West? Almost the whole drive follows US-1, the Overseas Highway, across 42 bridges and dozens of islands. Here is what to expect.
Distance and drive time: Key West is about 160 miles from MIA. The drive usually takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on traffic, weekend crowds and stops. US-1 is mostly one lane in each direction through the Keys, so one slow vehicle or an accident can add time.
Leaving Miami: from MIA the route heads south toward Florida City and Homestead, where US-1 becomes the Overseas Highway and crosses into the Florida Keys. Card Sound Road is an alternative route to north Key Largo.
Along the way, by mile marker: addresses in the Keys use mile markers (MM), counting down to MM 0 in Key West. Key Largo is around MM 106 to 91, Islamorada around MM 90 to 70, and Marathon around MM 60 to 47. Just past Marathon you cross the Seven Mile Bridge, then Bahia Honda and Big Pine Key before reaching Key West.
Tips: leave early on Fridays and holiday weekends, plan a stop in Islamorada or Marathon for food, and keep in mind that cell coverage and gas stations are thinner in the Lower Keys.
